Pumpkin Nature Suncatchers are so pretty and easy to make, I highly recommend you adding them to your Autumn to do list. Not only are they really simple to do, gathering the nature items will get you outside too! Win, win!
I personally find that my children enjoy nature collecting much more when they have a container of their own to fill. I use plastic sandwich boxes - they have great space but also if they are dropped they won’t smash. The containers are great for keeping children on task and they have a real sense of pride watching their treasures gather in their boxes.
You will need:
Recycled Card
Pumpkin Template
Sticky Back
Nature Goodies
A container (optional)
Head on out on a nature walk and collect some nature items that you can stick to your pumpkin suncatchers. Small leaves, small twigs, seeds and fairy hats are all perfect. Collect a fun, interesting variety. When you get back home you can empty your containers and take a good look at all the items you have collected.
Take a pumpkin template, you can use the free download at the bottom of this post if you wish. Draw it out onto some recycled cardboard. I always keep the cardboard from our Amazon deliveries and from our cereal boxes. The cardboard is a lot more sturdy that craft card and is really useful for art projects like this.
Younger children may need help with this step. You may decide to have a batch of them already cut out, ready to stick down. Older children will have fun navigating this part of the project.
Draw around your pumpkin and cut it out. Make a hole, gently in the centre and cut away the middle of the pumpkin, leaving your pumpkin outline. Take care when using the scissors.
Attach some sticky back and start to stick down your nature items. You can fill it as much as you like. Add different textures and colours to really get your pumpkins popping!
Lets see this activity in action:
Once you have attached all the nature items you wanted, hold them up against the light. Take them outside and hold them up against different colours.
Challenge the children to identify different colours, shapes, textures and see if they are able to identify any plants or trees they may have fallen from.
They're so much fun and really effective.
Give them a go!
