Today we have been making rainbow sun catchers. We have really enjoyed spotting the rainbows out and about in our local area as of late. The children can’t get enough of them and keep asking to make more of them. I’m not complaining as they are so delightful.
Today’s spin on rainbows involved using our stash of sweet wrappers that we have recycled from Christmas. I save them every year and they always come in great for crafts!
The sweet wrappers are from the Quality Streets. The little foil wrappers can be great for crafts too. I always try and reuse things where possible.

I made a quick template using a scrap piece of A4 paper. To make sure it was symmetrical I folded the piece of paper in half and drew one half of the rainbow. When I cut this out it created the full rainbow. I folded some black card in half. I wanted to make 2 rainbows per sheet of A4 card.
I carefully drew the template onto the card and cut out the rainbows along with the inside to make a rainbow outline.

I used black card so it would stand out against all the lovely bright colours. I think it was a fabulous contrast and really made the craft pop! If you don't have black card any card or paper will work just fine.
Lets see this activity in action:
I have always had sticky back plastic in our craft supply station however it’s very rare that I use it. The children were all really excited to see something new come out today and it was so quick and simple to do.
If you don't have a roll of this to hand you could use a laminating pouch and laminator to create your suncatchers as I have done many times before. Here is an example of this - Suncatcher Heart Card.
You could also try using a polly pocket. Cut it open and use glue to attach your translucent paper. I've never tried this method so I would be really interested to see and hear from you if you have.

I made four rainbows in total, I couldn’t resist joining in with this one! I really like how the children went about making their rainbows using a mosaic approach. They looked incredible when they were placed in the window.
The sun returned to us here in Birmingham today after hiding for a week. They looked great contrasted against the blue sky and emerging leaves on the trees.

Once the rainbows had all been decorated I cut out another piece of sticky back plastic the same size as the rainbow. Once peeled I placed this on top of the sweet wrapper papers to hold them all in place. This sealed the craft really well. We then cut around the rainbows before sticking them up in the window using some sellotape.
I love how they turned out. The children are already asking to make some more suncatchers!
