Spring Ice Ornaments

Spring Ice Ornaments Spring Activities for Preschoolers

We've had quite a bit of snow this year, compared to other years. So the fact Spring is on it's way is rather refreshing. I saw the first tulips last weekend. It always gives me that warm fuzzy feeling when I start to see signs of Spring. Everything is starting to wake up after the harsh Winter freezes. Outdoor play becomes more enjoyable for longer!

I always like to have a bunch of daffodils in the house as Spring unfolds. I know I'm not alone with this so today I am sharing a little something you can do with your flowers once they start to turn.

It took 2 days to make this ice sculpture. I used a jelly mould. I added a small amount of water and added some daffodils and left to freeze. The following night I topped the mould up with water and popped it back in the freezer so it would be ready to use the following day. I popped it outdoors whilst Neve was out playing. I didn't tell her about it. I just wanted to see if she would venture over to it in curiosity.

Neve just does not miss a trick. She was straight over touching it. She scooped it up in her hands and seems shocked at the cold on her skin and dropped it down onto the grass.

She bent down and continued to feel it with her hands. She noticed the daffodils inside straight away.

She kept picking it up and walking around before popping it back down to give her hands a rest. She was intrigued by the sculpture and couldn't understand how the daffodils got inside there.

Once this week daffodils start to turn I shall give her the opportunity to create her own.

All the handling of the ice had started the melting process. I held it in the air so she could see all the drips which she tried to catch with her hands. She stood underneath and giggled as it dripped down onto her face.

Me and Neve are going to go on a lovely Spring walk over the next few days to see what we can find. She wants to see if she can find some bits and bobs on her travels to add to her Spring Ice Ornaments. So I shall really look forward to that and I will return to share the outcomes with you.
