In 1957 Dr. Seuss released this fabulous tale of Cat in the Hat. in 2003 the film based on the story was released. Its a fabulous tale of a mischievous cat who visits two children whilst their Mother is at work. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it and of course the book is equally as brilliant. Today I want to share with you a Cat in the Hat inspired craft.
If you're a fan of Dr. Seuss - be sure to see our Grinch Wood Slice Craft too!
You can download the free printable at the bottom of this page.
You will need:
White and Black Card
Scissors
Glue
Crayons
To begin download and print the Cat in the Hat templates below. Invite your children to decorate and colour in the print outs. Use paint, crayons or felt tip pens! Talking of paints - if you didn't want to get too messy take a look at Paint Sticks from Little Brian Art. We love ours and use them all the time!
Using the scissors cut out all the template pieces you have.
A responsible adult will need to do the next step as it involves using the Xacto Knife. With care create a slit in the top of the hat. Look at the photo for reference.
Slip the Cats head into the hat and stick it in place using glue. Glue the head onto the black paper bag. Make sure to glue the head on the bottom of the bag (the part that flaps up).
Cut a white oval shape from the card and glue onto the black paper bag. Again refer to the photos to help guide. Add the bow to the bottom of the Cats neck. Add your hands, arms and legs to the paper bag, like so.
Cut a long thin strip from the black card. Cut the strip into small pieces and add them to the cats face where this whiskers would be. Turn the paper bag over and glue the tail in place.
Your paper bag puppet is now complete. How cute! Time to have some fun and bring to life your Cat in the Hat tales. Why not make up some of your own mischievous situations?
