Today I am sharing with you Piet Mondrian inspired art that my Preschooler really enjoyed!!
Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist born in 1872 and died in 1944 aged 71 in New York.
Mondrain began to produce abstract art after the first world war had ended in around 1919. He used black lines to create rectangles and squares, using the Primary Colours (red, yellow and blue) in his work.
This seemed like a perfect Art idea for a 3 year old! Not only did it mean we colour look at creating squares and rectangles, we could also talk about the three Primary colours.
To create Piet Mondrain Preschool Art like we have, you will need:
Paint - red, yellow and blue
Black Paper - cut into strips, long and short
Clear Canvas (if you want to create a sun catcher effect).
You could also use paper or a canvas if you prefer however.
Paintbrushes.
PVA Glue/ Glue Stick
Scissors
Plastic Plates
I used the laptop to get up a picture of Piets work to show Neve. She was very excited and helped me set up the table for painting. She took charge of squeezing out the paint she needed. She loves doing this and makes less mess than I do! It's a great little exercise for little hands.
I had already cut up the black paper into long and short strips to create the square and rectangular boxes for the base of the painting/suncatcher. Little N is currently learning how to use scissors and does a great job especially when using them with playdough. I included some sheets of black paper too so she had the opportunity to cut her own strips if she wanted to.
She began by placing the black strips onto her plate. She had the choice of PVA glue and a Glue Stick to stick the pieces of paper down. She opted for the glue stick which was actually much better. She added the black strips of paper down as she pleased and she even used scissors to trim the black piece of paper.
Here is a sneak peak at our Piet Mondrain inspired suncatchers against the beautiful blue sky before we set about painting them. Don't they look lovely against the sky? I'm excited to use the plates in other crafts too!
She took such care when painting her shapes! She did an excellent job!!
When she was finished we used the rest of the paint to colour mix and create new colours! She really enjoyed doing that and meanwhile her sun catcher was drying.
I'm not sharing too much information about the artists at the moment as she is far too young for that but that doesn't mean she can't experiment with the techniques they use. We look forward to looking and trialling lots of other techniques over the coming months and I'm sure we will be checking into share them all with you.
