Pine Cone Decoration Craft

Pine Cones are a delightful treasure offered by Nature each year that kids just love picking up collecting while they are out and about!

We did a Nature Walk in the Autumn and collected lots of conkers and we found several Pine Cones that have been sitting in Little N's wicker basket since.

Pine Cones fall in the Autumn here in the UK but in various places, especially that aren't visited much you may be lucky enough to find some all through-out the year!

Did you know:

- Pine Cones have genders!

- When a Pine Cone is green and hard, that indicates an immature female pine cone!

- Pine Cones can be found world wide and are used for a variety of different reasons:

They are used for arts and crafts, animal food and in the Ukraine Pine Cones are used to make jam!
Some countries also use them to create 'Cone Cow' toys . In Finland schools actually teach children how to make them as part of their outdoor education!!

Little N is always asking to paint or do something crafty and she went over to her basket and asked if she could paint the Pine Cones.

You will need:

Pine Cones
Paints
Brushes
Tray to dry them on
String
Rhinestone Gems
Glue
Glitter/Glitter Glue

I thought it was a great idea..... so out came the paints and Little N was away in her element!

It was a fun independent activity that I supervised from a short distance. She was away in her creative mindset and enjoyed painting a completely different texture/object!

We left them to dry for a couple of days before using some glue, glitter and Rhinestone Gems to add some sparkle!

We added some string to the top and now they are ready to be hung up!

You could use them in the garden during the warmer months and use them to decorate your Christmas Trees or settings during the Winter months!

So, next time you're out and you discover some pine cones.... keep this activity in mind - I'm sure your little ones will have lots of fun making their pine cones colourful and sparkly!

  1. Hi!
What kind of painting are you using? Is it resilient enough to stay on the pine cones?
    Thanks!!

  2. Hey, thank you so much! Great to hear you have enjoyed our blog! I use Acrylic Paints. At the moment they are inside but I am thinking of putting them on some string outdoors once the weather gets abit nicer. I am contemplating adding some sealer of some sort, to hopefully keep the paint in place.
