Diwali is the celebration of the Festival of Lights. It is celebrated for 5 days annually and the celebration falls either in October or November.
To celebrate Diwali family and friends gather and enjoy food, gift swapping, parties, lighting their homes up with divas and lights and they create Rangoli Patterns.
Today we are joined by Long Wittenham Preschool who have been busy celebrating this festival in their setting. Here is Diwali - Rangoli Patterns, Preschool Style.
My name is Vicky and I am the manager of a small village preschool.
We take up to 24 children in a session aged between 2 and 5 years old. We are situated in the beautiful village of Long Wittenham that sits along side the river Thames in Oxfordshire.
We are a pack away pre-school. This means that we set up our room with activities each day and then finish off but packing it all away. We have to think out of the box when it comes to displaying and setting up our continuous provision.
This terms theme is winter celebrations and this week we have been looking at Diwali, the festival of light. During our weekly planning meeting we found that one of our areas of development for this term was shapes, patterns and sequencing.
We started off by introducing shape into the continuous provision in our Numeracy area.
This paved the way to forming patterns with shape. We decided to turn our Tuff Tray into an area where the children could explore by creating Rangoli patterns.
As part of our celebrations we looked at some photos of Rangoli patterns and I placed these in the Tuff Tray along with different coloured shaped pasta.
A member of staff was on hand to support and observe the children as needed. The staff got stuck in and enjoyed creating alongside the children at times too!
As the week went on we found that the older children were using the chalk to make there own patterns in other areas which was great!
The activity was aimed at supporting forming patterns, using shape in play, taking a look at repeating patterns and sequencing - this activity ticked all the boxes.
As the children became confident to do there own patterns we found that they started sorting, putting the different shaped past into the separate bowls. Shape and positional language was also becoming part of conversation during their play.
