Frozen Oobleck Colour Mixing

Oobleck is mesmerising. When you begin to run your hands through it the sensation leaves you wanting to go back for more. Over the Summer we had a go at playing with some Oobleck in the garden in our Tuff Tray.

For today I decided to add a spin on the way we play with Oobleck and I popped it in the freezer to make it nice and cold. I had some great ice trays that I picked up from Ikea that worked well for this activity - yellow stars and red flowers.

To make Obleck you will need:


Cornflour Water Jug (something with a spout to make it easier to pour out.) Ice cube trays / Jelly containers Glitter (optional) Food Colouring / Liquid Water colours Start by mixing the cornflour and water to get the desired consistency, a jug is a great container for this. Add a few drops of colouring and mix. You can add glitter too if you wish.  The spout on the jug will give you great control when adding the mixture into the ice trays. Oobleck can be messy so using a jug will help limit the mess. Pop them into the freezer and leave them for a few hours (I always leave ours over night). I added various utensils to the invitation to play.  Little N sawed away at the blocks of Frozen Oobleck and dragged the fork through it once is was melted.  She clutched the stars and the flowers in the palms of her hands and watched as it melted.  It melted pretty quickly. It didn't take her very long to get completely stuck in and start picking up the melted Oobleck.  I couldn't resist to join in too, especially since she insisted I joined her! Today I just used the two colours but of course you could use more. The mixture was so delightfully messy! As it melted in Little N's finger tips - strands of Oobleck oozed through her fingers!
