Learning Colours with Nature

It has been such a dull day today, we threw our wellies in the car and we set out. No idea where we were going, we just drove out into the countryside. It wasn't long before we found a new woodland to go and explore. We set Little N a challenge to find as many different coloured flowers as she could.
She is 2 years 6 months old and she LOVED collecting lots of different flowers.

As she was really homing in on the wild flowers she also found lots of creepy crawlies. It wasn't long before she had collecting a beautiful rainbow bouquet of wild flowers. Once she had finished, we returned to the car and after giving them a good sake (to make sure there wasn't any bugs lingering) we popped them in the boot and headed for home.

With so many beautiful flowers collected I grabbed some chalk and off we went out in the garden. Little N was busy drawing on the patio. I took some chalk and coloured a handful of the slabs in block colours. "What are you doing?" Little N asked.

"I am going to sort out these beautiful flowers you collected" I replied. "Would you like to come and help me?" Woooshh she was over....

She was so great at colour matching and really enjoyed doing something different and outdoors. Once she had finished with the wild flowers we had a walk around our garden and collected a few more flowers to add to the collection.

Great fun activity that is free. It gets the kids outdoors being active and for younger children you can throw in the colour identifying and matching activity afterwards. To extend this you could also use the flowers and chalk and take letters, phonics, numbers and shapes outdoors:

You can also do this for name practice. If you want to look at doing something for older children, this activity has something covered for them to. Nature Mandalas can be seen here.

So next time you go on a woodland walk with your family, why not set your kids a challenge of collecting wild flowers? There are lots of fun things you can do with them!
