We love water beads for sensory play! They are tiny little balls that expand when hydrated in water. It takes around 8 hours for them to grow fully so I tend to put them in water and leave them overnight.
Here is the colourful array of water beads that we prepared for this sensory icy rainbow. Once they were all fully hydrated we set about creating a rainbow. We used a metal biscuit tin, that is a great arch shape. I places the beads in to create a rainbow and left them to freeze over night.
They looked great frozen and they provided a cold, wet, lumpy, bumpy surface - brilliant for Sensory Play!
The weather had been pretty delightful today so we took it outdoors to explore.....
Little N loved all of the colours and continutes to run her hands over all of the frozen, bumpy water beads. "It's very cold on my hands Mommy" she said.
She tried pulling the beads from the rainbow. We sang the rainbow song together that they sing in Bing (Little N's new favorite show), while we pointed to the colours. As you can image we had to do this several times. You know how Toddlers love repetition.
So if you are looking for a fun sensory activity for your kids remember the ice rainbow and have a go at making your very own.
Please note: Water beads are great fun to feel but they should not be eaten. If you have a child who is likely to put them in/by their mouth's it would be a good idea to wait until your child is older. As the beads as small there should always be close adult supervision.
