How to make and use a Story Chair

Fun Literacy Ideas for Kids - Story Chairs - Learning and Exploring Through Play

Do you enjoy making fun and quirky items for your settings? Creations that bring imagination and the world of make believe to life? Today's post is a totally new idea to me and I absolutely love it!! Story Chairs!!

Add beautiful pictures and illustrations to the chairs your children sit on!!

We have Karen Lloyd joining us from Chester who shares a little more with us on a wonderful story chair she created for the children in her classroom.

I currently teach Year 1 on a part time basis at a school I have been working at for over 10 years now. Before the start of this academic year I have been an Early Years teacher for several years. I enjoy making resources for the classroom. I love creating tailor made resources for our classroom to suit the needs and interests of the children.

I came across the idea of Story Chairs online. I do enjoy drawing but I don't always have the time. I brought some Sharpies and a plastic chair from Ikea. Together with my job share we selected various pictures we wanted to include on the chair. We decided to fill it with pictures from the stories we would be covering over the year ahead.

My sister helped me to draw the pictures on the chair and I used the Sharpies to colour it all in. I coated the chair in a spray varnish suitable to use on plastic.

We use the chair to help us retell the story in literacy or for any other special jobs linking to Literacy work. The children love it and enjoy being chosen to sit on it.

We are planning to add more story chairs to our setting over the coming months that link to children's interests.
We have found them to help engage children and keeping them on task. They view sitting on the chair as a special treat which is really lovely to see.

It helps bring characters and the children's imaginations to life. Even during free play time, some children are drawn to the chairs and enjoy sitting on them to read books, draw, pretend to be teachers and so on.

We often play various games where children will take it in turns to sit on the chair and make up a sentence to a story before another child sits on the chair and goes on to continue the story from the sentence before.
Its such a great way to unwind together after a busy day and has brought lots of laughs to the classroom!

  1. It is not an easy task to make the kids learning enjoyable at preschool. But many schools use various methods and different playful ideas to make learning an enjoyable process. Various activities are conducted by the teachers to make children easily understand the concept. This makes the children learn more quickly and adapt easily. Growing children learn very fast if guided properly. Such activities and playful drawing help children to grab the things and memorise them with more concentration. It makes the study interesting and kids participate with full energy. Thank you so much for sharing such useful information.
