Witches Hats Halloween Activity

Witches and Wizard Hat Treats

Although we reside in the second largest city in the UK - We always get super excited on the build up to Halloween! It's getting bigger and bigger over here each year, and its a good excuse to have your friends and family round for Pumpkin Carving, games and food!

Something else we absolutely love doing each year around this time, is Pumpkin Picking in a pick your own field. If this isn't something you have done before - I highly recommend it! So much fun! The children love running wild in the fields and coming back with a pumpkin they have selected themselves is quite fun and special.

Me and Neve headed out to the supermarket and brought what we needed to make Wizard and Witches hat treats. We make them every year and its something I look forward to doing with the children.

Not only are these great to make for Halloween but they work a treat for Harry Potter Day too!

From the supermarket we brought:

Cooking Chocolate
Ice Cream Cones
Sprinkles / Hundreds and Thousands
Smarties
Jelly Babies
Little Marshmallows

It was lovely bonding time actually, just the two of us heading to the shops to buy sweets and chocolate. What dream are made of right?!

I guess I am pretty strict on not having too many sweets and chocolate, something I didn't really recognise until I stood in the sweet isle encouraging her to 'go for it'.
I allow treats and snacks of course I do but in moderation. A healthy balanced diet is key to not only our physical health but mental health too.

But this is a fun little one off activity we do together once a year and the children love it!

Begin by breaking up the chocolate into blocks, after washing your hands of course.

Children love doing this part, it can be great for getting the muscles in their hands working, as it is often pretty tough to break up. Perfect opportunity to talk about how having smaller pieces would help the chocolate to melt faster.

As silly as this sounds - take care when melting the chocolate. If you have the temperature too high the chocolate will start to burn and form a paste that is irreversible. You want to pop the chocolate into a heat proof dish and heat the chocolate over steam from a bubbling saucepan full of water. Mix well and once it has the liquid consistency - remove immediately.

You so also have the option to use the microwave, but again take care if you do as the chocolate burns so easily!

I don't know if you have ever burnt chocolate in the microwave but the smell is probably one of the worst smells I have ever smelt in my life. Slow and Steady is key.

I used a painting palette for this activity which worked great to separate the sweeties.

If you were doing this with a group of children you could have several of these palettes for easier access.

You can find a range of styles like this on Amazon here -

Once the chocolate has melted it's time to get to work. Cover the cones in chocolate using a spoon to scoop it up and drizzle it all over.

Do this over the melted chocolate bowl if possible. It will capture the falling chocolate again, rather than it falling and solidifying on the surface and sticking your cone down with it in the process.

As the chocolate begins to set this is the perfect time to start adding your sweeties!
